Labor contract, 1865 July 21 (Society Hill, S.C.).

Society Hill, Darlington District, S.C., labor contract between J.W. Burn, planter, and eleven freed persons identified by name; J.L. Crowell and H[enry] C. Burn, witnesses. Burn agrees to provide homespun clothing, "bread corn," and "a strong pair of shoes" for all persons above the age of 6; freedmen agree to continue to work until 1 Jan. 1866; the persons are listed by gender, not by family units. Countersigned, 1 Aug. 1865, by G[eorge] H. Nye, Colonel, who from 1864-1866 commanded the Twenty-ninth Maine Veteran Volunteers, commanding Second Sub District, Eastern South Carolina, Darlington, S.C.

George H. Nye was born in Hallowell, Maine in 1828 of an old New England family. His early career in cotton manufacturing was interrupted by the Civil War, for which Nye volunteered only one month after its beginning in 1861. Nye spent Thanksgiving of 1861 at Camp Kelsey at Annapolis Junction, not far from where he would later live.
